About Interlibrary Loan
Through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) members of the JMU community may obtain items that are not available in the Libraries collections. This service is limited to JMU faculty, students, and staff. All non-JMU users, including those with library-issued borrower cards, should contact their local public library, workplace library, or other appropriate institution to obtain Interlibrary Loan service.
Submitting ILL Requests
Requests are only accepted through your Interlibrary Loan Account. Prior to submitting a request, but sure to enter your address and preferred delivery location in your ILL Account Settings > User Information section.
Please note that books received via Interlibrary Loan are intended for individual research use and cannot be placed on reserve, and requests cannot be transferred to other ILL user accounts.
Request Tips
- Complete all fields as accurately and completely as possible
- Avoid using abbreviations
- Include the source of the citation in case the Interlibrary Loan staff needs to locate additional information to fulfill the request
- Note any specific format needs (e.g. print instead of microfilm or electronic) - ILL staff will contact you if a preferred format is unavailable
Request in Library Search
You can also initiate ILL requests within our Library Search tool. When viewing a library item you want, select the "Interlibrary Loan" option in the "Get It - Request" section of the page to initiate a request in your ILL account.
Item Pick-Up and Delivery Options
Be sure to set a delivery location in your ILL Account Settings before submitting a request.
Items can be picked up by you or an authorized user designated in your ILL Account Settings.
Items designated as "In Library Use Only" will be held at the circulation desk for use in Rose Library.
All other items will be delivered to one of the following locations indicated in your ILL Account Settings > User Information section.

- Rose Library: Main lobby
- Memorial Hall: Educational Technology Media Center (ETMC) Room 7260
Mail Delivery
- Dept. MSC Delivery: Only for faculty, staff, and doctoral students (doctoral students must enter their campus departmental mailbox as their local address in their ILL Account Settings)
- Distance Learner: Mail to your home address, only for students that qualify as Distance Learners
Renewals
To renew an Interlibrary Loan item:
- Log in to your ILL account.
- Find the item on the "Checked Out to You" list and click the "Renew" link below the title. This will bring up a page with specific information about your request.
- If online renewals are available for the item, click the "Request Renewal" button.
- If online renewal is unavailable, please contact the ILL office directly at interlib@jmu.edu to discuss your renewal options.
Renewal Restrictions
- Renewal requests should be submitted on or before the due date.
- Renewal requests will not be accepted for any item that has already been renewed or that is overdue by 30 days or more.
- Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library; if your renewal request is denied, items must be returned immediately to the Interlibrary Loan Office.
Returns
All books must be returned to the circulation desk on or before the date they are due (located on the book strap) unless they are eligible for renewal.
Lenders have the option to "recall" a book before the due date if it is needed by one of their own patrons.
